Yellow Books - How Can a 3 Plus Pound Yellow Book Destroy This Planet?
By Phillip Allen
3 pound yellow books are killing our wildlife, polluting our water supplies and toxifying the very air we breathe. You ask how...Let's get right to the facts:
There are almost 2 phone directories (1.79) delivered to every American annually. That includes children, the mentally retarded, prisoners and invalids. That's over 500 million for the 301,130,947 American citizens and it generates over $13 billion in revenue for the various phone companies that have them published and delivered.
The vast majority of these phones directories are never used by those whom they are delivered to and only 10% are ever recycled. The other 90% go directly into the trash and further overflow our already compacted landfills.
Each phone directory weighs (on average) 3.62 pounds. When you multiply that weight by 540 million, it becomes 18 billion (with a "B") 900 million pounds of paper waste to burden our environment with.
In major cities, these phone directories average between 1000 and 1500 oversized pages of worthless information. Nobody even uses them since the advent of the Internet.
Stop the madness! Opt out of the mailing lists for these wasteful yellow page phone directories!
Worldwide, there is over $26 billion generated in revenue for phone companies that publish and distribute these valueless phone directories. Do you believe that these companies will voluntarily stop their production? What if everyone said that they did not want them any longer - that they were no longer necessary in our paperless societies? What if the advertisers stopped finding value in running ads in them?
It requires the destruction of 24 fully-developed trees to produce one single ton of paper. That translates into 226 million 800 thousand trees to produce just one year's worth of unread phone directories. All you have to do is to type in the name on the Internet and get the info with paperless ease!
The production of one ton of paper consumes 380 gallons of oil. That is 1520 quarts like you put in your car. This oil is burnt up in manufacturing machinery and emits toxic fumes into our atmosphere. It also pollutes factory water supplies which are either dumped or leached into our rivers, streams and lakes. And please, don't be so naive as to believe that these factories are recycling or otherwise disposing of this contaminated water in appropriate fashions.
Speaking of water, it requires 7000 gallons of it to produce the same ton (2000 pounds) of paper. When this water is finished with its job of paper production, it is left polluted and either requires purification (costing more energy expenditure) or gets dumped (causing death and poisoning).
It also requires 4000 kilowatts of energy to produce just one ton of paper. In a world where our natural resources are depleted, fossil fuel emissions are destroying the entire planet and people don't even read the yellow pages anymore, isn't this just a bit stupid to continue to support?
The time has been here and has passed us, people. Wake up now. Take a stance and help to preserve and protect the very limited natural resources that we have left! One very simplistic way to make a positive difference is to opt off of the mailing lists for unsolicited telephone directories. Do you really use them? How often?
Stand up and join the movement. Opt out of yellow book phone directory lists today!
